At CANADIAN STUCCO, in 2001, median hourly earnings of plasterers and stucco masons were $15. The middle 50 percent earned between $14 and $18. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $10 and the top 10 percent earned more than $20.
Five years later, in 2006, we pay our employees an average of $20 an hour. The stucco applicator hourly earnings are $25 and depending on experience, can go up to $30. Our apprentice wage rate starts at about $15 and can go up to $20 easily, in one year.
This is an average increase of 50% for the last five years.

Training, Other Qualifications and Advancements
Although most employers recommend apprenticeship as the best way to learn plastering and restoration, many people learn the trade by working as helpers for experienced restorers, plasterers and stucco masons. Those who learn the trade informally as helpers, usually starts by carrying materials, setting up scaffolds, mixing plaster, installing Styrofoam, rasping, concrete chipping, and painting. Later, they learn to install swing stages, apply the base coat, finish coat and install concrete forming, railings.
In the classroom, apprentices start with a history of the trade and the industry. They learn about different type of exterior insulated finish systems. They also learn about the uses of plaster, concrete, estimating materials and costs, and casting ornamental plaster designs and mouldings.
On the job site, they learn about plaster mixes, methods of plastering, blueprint reading, and safety. They also learn how to use various tools, such as hand and powered trowels, floats, brushes, straightedges, power tools, plaster-mixing machines, and piston-type pumps. Once on the job, every person must be specifically trained to safely use equipment, tools, materials, weights, objects, and any personal protection devices required for their specific job tasks. People learn best by showing, then doing.
Applicants for apprentice or helper jobs normally must be at least 18 years old, in good physical condition, and have good manual dexterity. Applicants who have a high school education are preferred. Courses in general mathematics, mechanical drawing, and shop provide a useful background.
With additional training and experience, plasterers and stucco masons may advance to positions as supervisors, superintendents, or estimators. Many of our employees become self-employed contractors. Others become building inspectors.
